From the Capitol to an SCES Classroom
Students of Mrs. Abbey Kidwell at South Clinton Elementary hosted a very special guest Thursday morning. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam stopped by the fourth grade class to fulfill his commitment to visit the classrooms represented in his Governor’s Teacher Cabinet. While there, Governor Haslam met with Director of Schools Kelly Johnson and principal Leighann Bonesteel to receive input on TN Ready testing, teacher evaluations, accountability and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
After the briefing, Governor Haslam observed a math lesson where students accessed the assignment on their Chromebooks, via Pear Deck, while providing the teacher with real-time information about their performance and level of understanding. Governor Haslam was impressed with the students’ level of engagement, as well as the level of collaboration and cooperation between the schools, the School Board and the City Council. The City of Clinton provides funding for the district’s Technology for Learning (T4L) one-to-one initiative.
Mrs. Kidwell is one of eighteen teachers from across the state who were selected to be part of the first Governor’s Teacher Cabinet who meet quarterly with the Governor and Education Commissioner Dr. Candice McQueen to share information from teachers that are in the classroom every day and provide communication to schools and communities.
